CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

CARLYLE

Lost in my own thoughts, I let Sol clean up my wound and bandage it, although there really wasn’t much point. The skin was tender but not raw - it wasn’t bleeding or torn, but red and tender, like the soft new skin under a scab.

There truly was a gouge in my shoulder, though, deep enough for me to fit most of my pinkie finger into.

“Gross,” I whispered, hoping it wouldn’t stay like that.

Jack was already snoring lightly in my bed when Sol and I joined him.

“What’s on your mind, shortcake?” Sol whispered, gathering me into his broad chest. He was careful not to jar my shoulder as he pulled the blanket up to my chin and dropped a kiss on my forehead. I nuzzled into his neck and breathed deep, hoping his summer afternoon scent would clear away the dark places in my brain.

I closed my eyes, but I doubted sleep would come tonight. My mind was spinning with so many problems I barely knew how to answer Sol’s question.

There was one thing bothering me that Sol might have some insight into. It had nothing to do with Aleron’s appearance, and everything to do with my mage - if I could even call him mine.

I wished I had Kana to talk to, though. It was awkward talking to a guy about this, especially one I was mated to. I didn’t want him to feel like he wasn’t enough for me.

Still, I needed to try. “It’s Dair,” I mumbled into Sol’s neck.

Sol settled his big hand at my waist above the blanket, waiting. I leaned my face back just enough to keep talking, keeping my voice low so I didn’t wake Jack.

“He came on the strongest of all of you when we first met, and he’s shared so much magic and time teaching me. I think I screwed it all up, though. When I used his magic to siphon back to the circus, everything changed. He says he’s not still upset about it, but there’s distance between us. Ever since Jack and I came back, that distance is filled with fucking Gina.”

I ended on a huff, knowing she was the biggest knot in this tangled mess. I could figure Dair out with some alone time.

My fear was that with all the craziness going on, I would never get that time, and Gina would weasel her way into his life. Maybe even his bed. My stomach churned at this thought - Dair was mine.

Sol propped his head on his hand and stared down at me, his lips pursed. “Dair is proud and keeps himself locked down a lot. He was raised to be in charge of his emotions all the time. When something throws him off - like you - he doesn’t know what to do. Believe me, though, he wants Gina gone, same as the rest of us. Jai thinks we need her magic, though. After tonight, I’m a hell of a lot more likely to agree.”

“It seems like he doesn’t want to be around me, though,” I whispered, feeling whiny and hating it.
